About Civil Sciences and Engineering
Civil Sciences and Engineering (CSE) is a Western Australian civil engineering consultancy delivering civil infrastructure solutions across local government, state agency, mining, and transport sectors.
We are built on a pragmatic engineering mindset.
In practice, we design infrastructure that functions effectively in real-world conditions, ensuring it is practical, compliant, buildable, and matches construction realities. Our approach prioritises outcomes rather than theory, clarity instead of complexity, and solutions that help minimise delivery risk.
Our project portfolio includes:
• Detailed design of regional and metropolitan road upgrades
• MRWA-compliant intersections and transport infrastructure packages
• Urban road safety treatments (roundabouts, raised platforms, pedestrian facilities)
• Pavement rehabilitation and reconstruction works
• Floodway, culvert and drainage upgrades
• Mine haul roads and heavy vehicle access design
• Industrial developments
Our work spans concept through to detailed design and Issued for Construction (IFC) documentation, often in regional and remote WA environments where constructability, staging and material optimisation are critical.
We maintain disciplined QA systems, strong documentation standards, and a culture that values accountability, technical rigour, and collaboration.
If you value practical engineering and want to work in a team that prioritises buildability and quality documentation, this role will suit you.
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Civil Designer / Drafter (Civil 3D) with strong Western Australian infrastructure experience.
This is a key technical role within our delivery team.
You will work across varied civil infrastructure projects including regional road reconstructions, MRWA-compliant intersection upgrades, haul road tie-ins for mining operations, drainage upgrades, and urban safety treatments to produce accurate, coordinated, construction-ready documentation.
You will not be siloed into repetitive subdivision drafting.
You will independently develop and manage Civil 3D models under engineering direction, including corridors, surfaces, drainage networks and earthworks, and lead the drafting components of projects from detailed design through to IFC issue.
Depending on project scale, you may be the sole designer on a project or work collaboratively alongside other designers and engineers. You will also contribute to mentoring junior drafters and strengthening CSE’s internal drafting standards and systems.
Key Responsibilities
• Prepare detailed civil design documentation using Autodesk Civil 3D
• Develop and manage Civil 3D corridors for urban and regional road upgrades
• Develop intersection geometry in accordance with MRWA and Austroads standards
• Model bulk earthworks and optimise cut/fill balances
• Design and document stormwater systems, culverts and floodways
• Undertake surface modelling and volume calculations
• Produce long sections, cross sections, grading plans, staging drawings and set-out information
• Prepare detailed IFC and tender documentation packages suitable for contractor pricing
• Extract quantities and support preparation of bills of quantities
• Coordinate services interfaces and multidisciplinary inputs
• Coordinate closely with engineers to translate design intent into practical documentation
• Review constructability and contribute to pragmatic design improvements
• Liaise with surveyors, contractors and stakeholders to resolve design issues
• Maintain drawing control, revisions and documentation standards
• Mentor junior drafters and assist in developing company drafting templates and workflows
We expect our designers to think beyond the screen by understanding how drawings will be interpreted and built on site.
Essential Skills & Experience
• Minimum 5+ years civil drafting/design experience in Western Australia
• Advanced proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D, including corridor modelling and surface management
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage detailed design models under engineering direction
• Strong experience in:
o Road design (urban, regional and heavy vehicle routes)
o Earthworks modelling and volume optimisation
o Stormwater and drainage design
o Preparation of IFC documentation
• Working knowledge of WA standards including:
o Main Roads WA (MRWA)
o Local government engineering specifications
o Austroads guidelines
o Demonstrated experience preparing detailed construction documentation suitable for tender and contractor use
o Strong understanding of constructability, staging and contractor requirements
o High attention to detail and disciplined documentation standards
Highly Regarded
• Mining infrastructure and haul road design experience
• Experience designing for heavy vehicle and road train access
• Knowledge of Wheatbelt or regional freight network requirements
• Knowledge of Water Corporation standards
• Experience within contractor-led or Design & Construct environments
• Multidisciplinary project exposure
• Advanced bulk earthworks modelling capability
Qualifications
• Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
• Engineering degree advantageous but not essential
• Ongoing Civil 3D training or professional development viewed positively
What We Offer
• Exposure to diverse infrastructure projects across WA, including regional, metropolitan and mining environments
• Direct collaboration with a small, technically focused team (Principal Engineer, Civil Engineers and Designers)
• Genuine involvement in meaningful transport and civil works from detailed design through construction support
• Opportunity to influence drafting standards and technical systems within a growing consultancy
• Competitive remuneration aligned with WA market rates
• Flexible working arrangements where appropriate
• Stable project pipeline across government and resources sectors
• Clear opportunity for progression as the business continues to grow
At CSE, we value designers who think critically, take ownership of their work, and care about delivering infrastructure that performs as intended.
Who This Role Suits
This role is ideal for a designer who:
• Has strong WA infrastructure experience
• Can independently deliver Civil 3D design packages under engineering direction
• Prefers practical, buildable design over over-engineered solutions
• Enjoys technical problem-solving across varied infrastructure projects
• Wants exposure beyond repetitive subdivision projects
• Takes pride in documentation quality and model integrity
• Is willing to mentor junior staff and contribute to raising internal standards
If you want to work in a consultancy where pragmatic engineering is more than a slogan — where your experience and judgement are respected — we encourage you to apply.
